Prediction of Magnetic Storms by Nonlinear

چکیده
The strong correlation between magnetic storms and southward interplanetary magnetic eld (IMF) is well known from linear prediction lter studies using the Dst and IMF data. However, the linear lters change signiicantly from one storm to another and thus are limited in their predicting ability. Previous studies have indicated nonlinearity in the magneto-spheric response as the ring current decay rate varies with the Dst value during storms. We present in this letter nonlinear models for the evolution of the Dst based on the OMNI database for 1964-1990. When solar wind data are available in advance, the evolution of storms can be predicted from the Dst and IMF data. Solar wind data, however, are not available most of the time or are available typically an hour or less in advance. Therefore, we have developed non-linear predictive models based on the Dst data alone. In the absence of solar wind data, these models cannot predict the storm onset, but can predict the storm evolution, and may identify intense storms from moderate ones. The input-output model based on IMF and Dst data, the autonomous model based on Dst alone, and a combination of the two can be used as forecasting tools for space weather.

A Nonlinear Autoregressive Approach to Statistical Prediction of Disturbance Storm Time Geomagnetic Fluctuations Using Solar Data
A nonlinear autoregressive approach with exogenous input is used as a novel method for statistical forecasting of the disturbance storm time index, a measure of space weather related to the ring current which surrounds the Earth, and fluctuations in disturbance storm time field strength as a result of incoming solar particles. This ring current produces a magnetic field which opposes the planet...
متن کاملPrediction of Geomagnetic Storms Associated With Halo CMEs of January and April 1997
The 6 January 1997 and 7 April 1997 halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds observed by WIND that led to increased geomagnetic storm activity as indicated by the hourly Dst index. A recently developed storm-prediction method is retrospectively applied to these two solar wind (SW) structures. The results are described in detail. Had the algorithm be...
متن کاملNonlinear Model of Tape Wound Core Transformers
Recently, tape wound cores due to their excellent magnetic properties, are widely used in different types of transformers. Performance prediction of these transformers needs an accurate model with ability to determine flux distribution within the core and magnetic loss. Spiral structure of tape wound cores affects the flux distribution and always cause complication of analysis. In this paper, a...
متن کاملThe Automatic Predictability of Super Geomagnetic Storm from Halo CMEs Associated with Large Solar Flares
We investigate the relationship between magnetic structures of CME source regions and geomagnetic storms, in particular the super storms when the Dst index decreases below -200nT. By examining all full halo CMEs that erupted between 1996 and 2004, we selected 73 events associated with M and X-class solar flares, which have a clearly identifiable source region. By analyzing daily full disk MDI m...
